How Often Should You Weed a Utah Yard?

How often should you weed? In Utah’s growing season, about once a week is the answer for beds that you want to stay clean. In the colder months, much less often. Here is why, and how the timing changes through the year.
Why weekly works
In summer heat, many weeds go from sprouting to making seed in a matter of weeks. A bed that was clean last week can have a crop of seedlings by the next one, and a few more days turns them into plants that are harder to pull. Pulling weekly catches them while they are small and before they drop seed, so the number of new weeds shrinks over the season.
What happens if you wait a month
- Seedlings become bigger plants with deeper roots, which take longer to pull.
- Annual weeds such as goatheads and crabgrass start making seed, which adds to next year’s weeds.
- Perennials such as bindweed climb your plants and get harder to untangle.
- The job becomes a half-day cleanup, which is why it is easy to put it off even longer.
How the schedule changes by season
- March to May: the spring flush. Every week or two keeps up with it.
- June to August: peak growth. Weekly is the safe rhythm.
- September to October: growth slows, but weeds go to seed. Every one to two weeks, with a good fall pull.
- November to February: little growth. Many people pause.

Does it have to be a full hour?
Not necessarily. A weekly visit of an hour is enough for many yards once the beds are under control. Larger yards, or ones with many beds and rock areas, may need more time per visit. A bed that has never been weeded may need a bigger first pass before weekly upkeep works.
One big cleanup vs. a weekly visit
A one-time cleanup is useful for a yard that is badly overgrown. For upkeep, though, a regular schedule is easier on the yard and on you, because the weeds never get big. That is the idea behind weekly weed pulling: a weeder visits once a week and pulls what has come up. Plans start at $322 a month for one hour a week.
